1920’s Men’s Suits: A Brief History.

By  |

1920’s men’s suits are on discussion today folks. They say that the best way to understand your present and your future is to understand what happened in your past. The 1920’s, or the roaring twenties as it is so fondly nicknamed, featured a traditional and classic suit style for the men of its era. 1920’s men’s suits were more often worn to a man’s job rather than recreationally. The quality of a gentleman’s suit in the 20’s reflected his standing in society. Upper-classmen dressed in the very best while middle-class wore similar yet less expensive and exquisite suits and those men of the working-class wore a laborer’s uniform.

There was a strong emphasis on formality and neatness in these years, as those were believed to be the traits of a true gentleman. Along with this formality, there was the birth of clothing of comfort and leisure. This was due to the influence of athleticism and stars in the various sporting disciplines. Hop in the time machine, here’s a look at 1920’s men’s suits and their influence on fashion over the years.

1920’s Men’s Suits: Fashion Flashback.

Do you remember the time? Of course you don’t, you (most probably) wouldn’t have even been born yet.

Still, let’s take a look at the fashion. In the 1920’s, most of the men’s suits came from Britain. Yes, Britain. You read correctly. Paris, the fashion titan, turned to Britain for fashion answers. The British appearance was that of the double breasted jacket, without shoulder padding and narrow sleeves. The trousers were high waist pants with a slight curve around the hip area.

The natural body shape was the preference for the frame of the men’s suit in the 1920’s. Suspenders were still being worn, but the world was slowly shifting towards the leather belt. The suit colours of the time typically remained on the darker side with navy-blues, browns and blacks. Lighter suit colours were worn by the rich and successful few in society.

Of course, there’s no forgetting the accessorizing. Hats, pocket watches and canes or umbrellas were all the rage in the 20’s. A gentleman was almost never seen without all the above.

1920’s Men’s Suits: Back to the future.

Sorry, we didn’t use a DeLorean to get here. We now present you with, well, the present. Now that you’ve had a look at the past, you see its similarities don’t you? The 1920’s kickstarted the well-oiled engine that we know as modern day men’s fashion and menswear. This was the era that took the first steps away from formal being the only option. The influence of 1920’s men’s suit fashion can be seen in how we accessorize with our shirts, ties, shoes and even pocket squares. The traditional three-piece suit has stood the test of time and made it to today. Talk about time travelling, right?
